Amos 9
Faith, hope, & charity (love) are three of the greatest gifts we read about in the Word. Amos talks about one of those gifts in chapter 9--HOPE! This gift is one that can build up our frail bodies, lift up broken spirits, and turn our darkest days into praise. We have seen throughout the book of Amos warning after warning against Israel. Israel is headed for destruction and damnation and it looks as if there is no hope left for her. But as we will see in this final chapter that Amos ends his prophecy with a surprising finale. Amos prophesies of hope and of a pledge and a renewed revelation from God.
Many people look at hope as just daydreams, wishful thinking or empty desires but hope is very different from these things. Hope is to wish for something with expectation of its fulfillment or having confidence or trust that it will happen. Hope is the desire or expectation coupled with belief that something will happen. Daydreams, wishful thinking is simply the musing or fantasizing for something you know you won't get. Amos delivers the message of hope to Israel!
Read chapter 9 of Amos before going on.
We see in chapter 9 the fifth and final vision of Amos from the Lord. God is omnipresent and there will be no place for anyone to hide from His coming judgment. Verses 1-4 show us it makes no difference where they try to go God will find them. Verses 5-6 tell us of God's power and infinite glory. And then Amos tells something shocking in verses 7-8. Israel is going to perish as if they never existed as a kingdom in covenant with God. Israel as a nation will be no more but as individuals not every one perish. Only the sinners will perish. The righteous will not be destroyed and going into verses 9-10 a glimmer of hope is given to the house of Jacob. They will not be totally destroyed.
God's proclamation of hope grows brighter as the next verses indicate. God is going to raise up the tabernacle of David that had fallen due to the revolt of the ten tribes. Verses 11-15 also speak of the setting up of the kingdom of the Messiah. And the final hope for Israel is spoke of also in verse 15 when God says He will restore His people Israel back to their rightful place if they will seek His face and turn to Him.
This message from Amos is for us today! There is no place for you to hide. You cannot hide from God. He created you and He knows your every thought and every movement before you do. He knows when you are going sin, He knows when you are going repent, He knows when you are going to finally get serious about Him. He's giving us a warning today, He's giving us many warnings today, will you heed them and turn from your wicked ways and seek the face of God. If we will heed His warnings and turn from our sins He will remove us from the fires of hell and restore our land and free us from the burdens of this world.
