In verse 1:18 these lights were to rule over the day and the night. To divide the light from the darkness, God saw it was good.
Every day since that day the sun has been doing what it was created to do. It never stops giving light. If the sun failed to give light the moon would have no light. The moon gets its light from the sun. When there is a storm going on in the earth if you get up above the clouds the sun is still shining, just as bright as ever! It could say, "no one will see me so I will just take the day off." If it did the earth would begin to freeze. The sun warms the whole earth.
Without the sun doing its job there would be no life on planet earth. If the sun did not do what it was created to do, nothing else would function, as it should. Let us look at this from the standpoint of man.
God created man in His own likeness and image. He gave man one commandment: Do not partake of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. I am sure Eve and Adam with her did not realize the far-reaching consequences of being disobedient. How could they know that all future generations would be affected by their decision?
If the sun had a will and failed to do its job, no life on earth would survive. Adam and Eve disobeyed one command and sin entered the earth. When will we learn that what God commands us to do is for our own benefit? We may not understand it but trust does it anyway! God has every thing He needs; He is trying to give us life and that more abundantly.
Matthew 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. Verse 16 says let your light shine before men. Why should we do this? The best reason I know of is He said do it! Let's look beyond that. If the sun quit doing its job many on the earth would die. Jesus was the light while He walked this earth. Now, if we have Jesus in us, we are the lights of the world. If we do not let the light of Jesus shine through us, many will perish.
Like the sun we should not use an excuse saying this is an Excedrin day so I can't let the light shine. There is a storm going on in my life so today is just not my day. In saying these things we seem to forget that He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He is our light and He never changes! The darker and more ungodly this world gets is only more of an opportunity to let the light of Jesus Christ shine through us.
If we do not, just as many would perish if the sun stopped shining, many souls will perish if they do not find Jesus through us. We are His witnesses in this generation. Think of this. No child is brought into this world by its own desire. Is it not brought in by the desire of its daddy and mother? In a spiritual sense God is the Father and the church is the Wife. We know it is God's desire to save souls and when the church desires it with their whole heart God will give the increase. One plants another waters but God gives the increase.
Saul, later called Paul, did not desire to be saved, but one day The Lord revealed Himself to him. Why did this happen? I submit it was because the church prayed and God did the rest. When I received Christ the last thing on my mind that morning was Jesus. I got up to go hunting and did; but the Lord had me on His mind. Thank God He did! Why did this happen? My mother as well as others prayed for me all my life and God gave the increase. I really, really feel for those who have no one to pray for them.
Let us, who know Jesus, let the light of Jesus be seen in and through us, all the time. That light is to divide the darkness and the light. God give us the increase.
Take a lesson from the sun.
--GOD'S SUNSHINE:
Never since the world began
Has the sun ever stopped shining.
And we grumble at his inconsistency,
But the clouds were to blame, not the sun,
For behind the clouds he was still shining.
And so behind life's darkest cloud
God's love is always shining.
We veil it, at times, with our faithless
fears,
But in time the atmosphere always clears,
For His love is always shining.
