What Is Love

Rather than give the meaning, according to the Greek or Hebrew dictionary, I would like to give some examples of Godly love.

2 Sam 23:16 And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD.

David was extremely thirsty and his men risked their lives to get water for him. David refused to drink it preferring to give it to the Lord. He believed that only the Lord deserved that kind of offering. This was love in action by David's men and by David.

Heb 11:24-25 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

Moses chooses to suffer with his people rather than enjoy life apart from them. That is love in action!

In John chapter eight the Pharisees brought a woman to Jesus who had been taken in the act of adultery. They wanted to stone her to death. After Jesus talked with them they left. Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more.” Now that is love in action!

When Jesus stood in Pilate's judgment hall and allowed them to whip Him, spit on Him, slap Him; crown Him with thorns all because we were guilty. That is love in action!

When He left there and started up to Golgotha, He tried to carry His cross but was too weak from the beating He had received. A Black man carried it for Him. Jesus was weak because He had endured our punishment. Now that is love in action!

Jesus allowed them to nail Him to a cross and hang Him up before the people to be mocked and ridiculed. While He was in excruciating pain He cried out; “Forgive them for they know not what they do.” That is love in action!

Jesus didn't just go to the cross and suffer. He shed His blood and died for the remission of our sin. He was buried, arose and lives to make intercession for those who believe in Him. Love in action!

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

If God had said, from heaven, “I love you” and hadn't done anything to demonstrate His love what good would it be for us? God's love motivated Him to action and He gave His only begotten Son a sacrifice for our sin. No one took the life of Jesus, He gave His life so we might have eternal life. Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift of love in action!

Just mouthing the words "Jesus I love You" is mighty weak considering what He has done for us. We are entering our Thanksgiving and Christmas season, what are we doing, or going to do, to demonstrate our love and thanks for our Lord and Savior?
