Introduction to: The Gospel of Matthew
The Gospel according to Matthew, a disciple of Jesus Christ was written around the year 60. Matthew, named Levi, was a Jewish tax collector. Matthew, a publican and worked for the Roman government. Matthew and all publicans were hated by the Jews but Matthew reacted to Christ’s call to "follow HIM." Matthew is not mentioned very much in the works of the New Testament but he is said to have preached the Gospel of Christ to the Palestinians for over 10 years after the death, burial and resurrection of Christ.
The Gospel of Matthew written to the Jews answers questions about Jesus of Nazareth, who is the one claiming to be the Messiah. Some of the questions Matthew deals with are:
·
Was Jesus truly the Messiah
·
If He was did He accomplish what He came for
·
Will the kingdom of God be established
·
What is God’s purpose for His people
The main theme of Matthew centers on the life and ministry of Jesus as King of the Jews. The Kingdom of heaven is the main subject matter covered by Matthew. Some other important topics covered in this Gospel are:
·
The Sermon on the Mount covered in chapters five to seven
·
The Beatitudes also covered in chapter five
·
The Lord's Prayer covered in chapter six
