Matthew Chapter 9

Matthew 9:1 And so Jesus left their shores by entering into a boat crossing over coming into His own city, Capernaum. Mark chapter 2 and Luke chapter 5 harmonize with this chapter also.

Matthew 9:2-8 Soon after Jesus' arrival they brought to Him a man sick of the palsy (Mark 2:1-12 and Luke 5:17-26).  The man was lying on a bed unable to bring himself before Christ.  Jesus seeing their faith said unto the man sick of the palsy, Son, be of good cheer; thy sins are forgiven.  Now, there were also certain scribes amongst them that witnessed the healing and the scribes said to themselves this man called Jesus blasphemes.  And again we see that Jesus knew what their thoughts were before they actually voiced them and He could sense their hearts that they were thinking evil thoughts.  So, knowing their thoughts Jesus said which is easier, to say thy sins are forgiven or to say arise and walk?  And so they may know that the Son of man, Jesus, has authority on earth to forgive sins, He says to the sick man, Arise, take up your bed and go into your house.  And he arose and walked into his house.  Seeing the thing Jesus did the multitudes were afraid and gave glory to God amazed at God's greatness in giving such authority to this man Jesus.

Matthew 9:9 Jesus passing by the place where taxes are taken, tolls, saw a man called Matthew sitting there.  He said to Matthew, "Follow Me" and Matthew arose and followed Jesus.  Matthew did not hesitate, did not say let me go see to my family, let me make arrangements, Jesus said, "Follow Me" and Matthew obeyed without hesitation.  How many of us obey when Christ speaks to us?

Matthew 9:10-13 It seems that Jesus was invited to the home of Matthew and while there a meal was prepared for them.  And it also seems that Matthew invited many of his friends to join them.  Tax-gatherers and sinners were feasting at the table with Jesus.  Tax-gatherers had a bad reputation for being unfair and dishonest and sinners of course lived unclean lives and not to be associated with according to the Pharisees.  And the Pharisees seeing this questioned the disciples as to why their teacher would eat with sinners and publicans.  Jesus hearing this said "it is not those that are whole that need a physician, but they that are sick."  Jesus said, learn from this, see what I say and mean, I desire mercy and compassion, not sacrifice (Hosea 6:6) for I did not come to save the well, the righteous, but instead I came for the sick, the sinners.

Matthew 9:14-17 Verses 14 to 17 talk about fasting.  The Pharisees fasted twice a week conspicuously. They wanted to be seen as pious.  John's disciples were most probably fasting in mourning of John.  And they came to Jesus to find out why they fasted but His disciples did not.  Jesus said why should the bride's attendants mourn while the bride is with them, but there comes a day when the bride will no longer be with them and then they will fast.  As Believers we should be aware of all things pertaining to Christ and as disciples of Christ it would not be proper to mourn Him while He yet lives just as guests at a wedding should not be of the appearance of sadness and despair.  The life given by Christ is a new life and should remain that, not soiled but the putting back on of the old life.  The new life is fresh and vital, the old life is stale and stagnant and just as an old wineskin, if you pour fresh wine into it it will burst thus loosing the new wine.  So put on the new life given by Christ and rejoice in Him.

Matthew 9:18 While Jesus was talking about fasting at the table of Matthew a certain ruler came to Him and worshipped Him.  We know from Mark this ruler was Jairus and he said to Jesus, "my daughter is dead."

Matthew 9:19-22 Hearing this Jesus arose from Matthew's table and left with Jairus and while He was walking a woman suffering from a blood disorder came up behind Jesus (she had faith, and believed that if she only touched Him she would be healed) and reached out and touched the hem of His garment. And Jesus feeling the power go forth from Him turned saying, "Daughter, be of good cheer, thy faith hath made thee whole." And the woman burdened with this disorder for 12 years was made whole in that very hour. These verses define for us the true importance of faith in Christ and of the power in Him!

Matthew 9:23-26 And as Jesus continued on with Jairus He came to the official's home and found many there wailing over her death and Jesus said she is not dead but simply sleeps.  The people knowing she was dead from having been there touched her seen her die laughed at Him and mocked Him and Jesus had them put the crowd out and He went into the house and took her by the hand and she arose and the people spread the word across the land.

Matthew 9:27-31 And as Jesus was ready to leave the home of Jairus two blind men that had followed Him there came to Him crying out having mercy on us 'Son of David.' The phrase, 'Son of David' was a common name among the Jews representing the expected Messiah.  Some believe that Jesus actually left the house of Jairus and the blind men followed Him to perhaps Peter's house while others think He had not yet left the home of Jairus and reentered to deal with the blind men.  The actual place I do not believe is that important, but instead what is important is the fact that these blind men followed Jesus believing that He would be able to restore their site.  It is their faith that we find of importance - faith we as Believers should have.  The more the news spread of the miracles of Jesus the more people came to Him by faith expecting.  Most of us come to Jesus without faith and without expectation and than criticize Him for not receiving when it was our own faith that failed!  Jesus spoke sternly to them telling them not to tell anyone of this, but they quickly went forth spreading the news of the great miracles of Jesus. We can only speculate that Jesus did not want the news yet public because He knew what was going to take place and He wanted to reach more souls before the end came to Him.

Matthew 9:32-34 As they continued on their way a dumb man with a demon was brought before them. After Jesus cast the demon out of him, the dumb man spoke. It is thought by some that this dumb man was this way because of physical birth defects coupled with spiritual problems but most likely he was this way as the scripture alludes - from the demon in him.  We have read in other scriptures how the demons can cause a person to lose their reasoning, go into convulsions and fits and such so causing the dumb man to not be able to speak would be possible also.  Seeing this the Pharisees said they had never seen such a thing and stated that Jesus must have cast the demon out by power of the prince of the demons.

Matthew 9:35 The statement made by the Pharisees did not stop Jesus and the disciples though, Jesus went about the country stopping in the cities and villages teaching and witnessing of the Gospel of the Kingdom of God and He also went about healing every type of disease and sickness.

Matthew 9:36-38 Jesus was a very compassionate person and when he traveled in the cities and villages He would see many that were distressed and downcast.  They were like sheep without a shepherd.  Sheep without a shepherd would just wander around lost and forsaken. We see in these verses that Jesus sent the disciples out amongst the people because there were so many of them and they had seen and heard of the mighty things that Jesus had done and so Jesus sent the disciples out also to teach and witness of the Gospel of Christ to the multitudes.  Jesus said the harvest is plenteous but the laborers are few meaning that the multitudes were ready to receive but the workers to bring the Word to them were few but these few willing went forth amongst the people to to bring them to the Lord!

Father, the harvest is plenteous and the workers are few and I pray that You anoint more workers and those workers that are now in the field I pray Father that You continue to pour out Your Spirit upon them giving them the boldness and courage needed to go forth in the Name of Jesus teaching, healing, and admonishing sin in Jesus name I pray amen.
