New Born Babies
Mr. and Mrs. Christian were about to have their first child and soon came the time of delivery. She rushed to the hospital and soon birthed a healthy baby boy. She and her husband were very happy. They carried the baby home, put him in the room they had prepared for him.
They went about their usual routine. Father had his daily work. The mother had things that required her attention. Once, maybe twice a week, she went in and fed the baby. God would take care of the child; after all, He was the one who gave them the child so in reality it was God's child.
Since it was God's child, He had taken care of all its needs at birth. No need to feed it or clean it up, that was God's work. When the baby cried she would go in sing him a little song and give him a pacifier. Then she would pat him on the back and assure him he was all right. The parents had conceived the child, the mother had given birth, and now their work was done.
One day she looked in on the baby and found it dead. The autopsy showed gross neglect and malnutrition. The parents were brought into court and gave their explanation of why they didn't take care of the baby. Clearly, God was to blame.
Most everyone would be horrified to hear of such as this. They would think the woman and man were mentally disturbed at best. Certainly not good parents, they should be punished properly.
The above scenario I made up, although much the same thing is happening all over the world in many of today's churches. The new convert is told they received all they will ever need when they made their profession of faith and joined the church. Now all they need do is come to church maybe once a week and help with the expenses. Thank God not all churches are like this.
The new Christian is told nothing they can do or not do will cause them to miss heaven. If this were true we could do away with most of the Bible. All we would need is maybe John 3:16 and Romans 10:9-10. (These are great verses and a good place to start.)
Being born new, like the natural birth, is just the start of a new life and is by no means the finish. Much learning and growth needs to take place. Care must be taken to get the right food and drink. All need a balanced diet. Like a new baby in the natural they mess up and need cleaning. This is what good Teaching and Pastoral care is all about. This requires love and patience on the part of those who love God and love His children.
John 21:15 So
when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon
Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these?
He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto
him, Feed my lambs.
2 Tim 3:16 All
scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine,
for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
1 Pet 2:2-3 As
newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
1 John 3:18 My
little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed
and in truth.
The truth, from the Bible, is that all need to be fed the word of God daily and need the washing of the water by the word of God. If this is not done the spirit man will starve to death. They must hear that we are saved by grace and that grace teaches us that denying ungodliness and worldly lust we should live holy and righteously in this present world.
New Christians need to hear they are babies in Christ and must be fed and cleansed regularly. They need to be nourished in the ways of God. They must have older Christians who will be God's hand extended to them and minister to them God's word.
They need to be loved and cared for according to God's word. Give these the sincere milk of the word of God so they can grow up strong in the Lord. As soon as possible get them off the milk and get the meat of the word in them. They need someone who, like a good natural parent, will be more concerned for their spiritual welfare than their own.
These adult Christians will deny themselves to take care of the needs of the newborn child of God. It's not enough to tell our Lord we love Him. He said, “If you love me feed my sheep.” Also He said, “If you love me keep my commandments.” Lip service is not enough with God; we must put our faith into action and do something that shows our faith.
Feed My sheep.
