I wonder how many of us, who have a mate, would be happy if our mate was just true to us part of the time? Suppose they returned to a former lover from time to time and then returned to us as if we should not be angry. I ask, would you just pat your wife or husband on the back and say, "That's all right. I love you even though you spent a few days with a former lover."?
I said all the above to illustrate that many of us treat our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, this way. We come to Him and repent and believe on Him for salvation. We ask Him to forgive all our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness and become Lord of our life. Praise God, He does it! Then we go and continue to commit a known sin!
1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
Jesus came into this world to deliver us from the authority of sin. John said, “Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) How can we that are dead to sin live any longer therein? (Romans 6:2). Jesus said; “If you love me keep my commandments.” (John 14:15). If we continue in known sin the Bible says, we are of the devil. If we do this; have we not returned to our former "lover"?
Why would we, if we love the Lord, do anything that we know makes Him unhappy? The scripture says, He that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17). Again why would anyone who loves the Lord keep doing a thing they know is a sin? If a husband dated a former lover and returned to his wife and said “You know I love you but I just couldn't help myself,” wife, how would you feel about that? I know what my wife would say!
The scripture says, John 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. Through faith in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ the authority of sin is broken over our life. He has set us free! Anything that has no authority over us; why should we submit to it? If we do, is that not willful sin? This puts us on very dangerous ground.
John 5:14 Afterward
Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made
whole: sin no more,
lest a worse thing come unto thee.
John 8:11 She
said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee:
go, and sin no more.
If it's not possible to quit known sin, why would Jesus tell these to do something that was impossible for them? I believe it was because He was going to give them, in and through Himself, the ability to do it. He set them free! Praise God! In Him we live and move and have our very being!
John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
You might say, I have sinned since I was born again, what should I do? By the way; so have I. As we all grow in the knowledge and understanding of Christ, by studying the word of God and prayer, we see things we are doing are sin and that is time to ask for forgiveness. When I realize I have sinned, I do what the scripture says do. What does the scripture say?
1 John 2:1-2 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
The word advocate means attorney. You need a Lawyer. When you need a Lawyer, as we all know, you are in trouble! The good news is that Jesus has never lost a case when it's put in His control. To put it in His control we must be honest with Him and confess our sin and ask to be forgiven. It is not hid from Him. He already knows about it. All we need do is confess that we have sinned and repent. If we do, He will forgive us and cleanse us from all sin.
Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
