This is just as true as John 3:16. It is the word of God. It is written, every person will reap what he or she sows. Some of us sow the wrong seed and pray for a crop failure! Some today live in much unhappiness, much trouble, continually griping, and moaning, groaning and complaining. Bad things are happening to them all the time. (I am not talking about going through a time of testing. Here I am speaking of a life style.
These usually blame others for all their problems. Someone else is always to blame. If others would change they would be happy. Not so, many times if we would check up on our spiritual life we would find we are reaping what we have sown! God may be using these situations to get our attention. Are we putting Him first or have we gotten our priorities mixed up? These verses say we reap what we sow; not what others sow!
I realize that sometimes we get into a situation where someone else is to blame and if this is the case, we must either face it or get out, if necessary. This could be in a marriage where abuse is taking place, etc. I believe we should, in all situations, check up on ourselves first to see if we are part of the problem. We could be reaping what we have sown.
The heart of these verses is this; are we sowing to the Spirit or to the flesh? If we sow to the flesh the only harvest we will have is corruption. Corruption – going into a worst state – a destruction – brought under bondage – death and decay – short lived, etc. Sowing to the flesh is sowing seeds of death. I do not believe any of us want that kind of harvest! In reality a Christian that sows to the flesh is trying to give life to the old man that was crucified with Christ. Galatians 5:24 “ And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.”
Why should we continue to make provisions for something dead and buried? We are to sow to the Spirit. The harvest of this will be life everlasting.
What is sowing to the Spirit? Glad you asked! John 6:63 “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are, Spirit, and they are life.” A great part of sowing to the Spirit is finding out what God says and becoming a doer of that.
If we find, as we study God's word, that we are doing something contrary to the word it is not enough to start doing it right. We must repent and ask God to forgive us and then with His strength start being a doer of truth. This will bring life and not death to us! If you have been doing it wrong don't let the devil tell you to give up. Just ask God to forgive you and He will.
Let me state this here. When my children were growing up they messed up sometimes. When they did, a neighbor would, on occasions, try to correct them. That would make me angry. They might be in trouble with me but not with a neighbor. I would do the correcting not a neighbor!
I said that to say this, as a child of God it is not any of the devil's business what we do. We do not belong to him. He will accuse us and tell us to give up. He has nothing to do with it; we belong to God. Our problem is with God and we have an Attorney sitting beside the Father who has never lost a battle! If we repent He will plead our cause.
The first thing a good attorney will tell you is this “be quite and let me handle your case.” Let us not get into a discussion with satan about it. He wants us to believe we have messed up with no reprieve. (This usually takes place in our mind.) No so, let Jesus our Attorney, handle it.
Let us come boldly to the throne of God to find help in time of need. Jesus has been tempted in all things so He knows just what we need. Some of us try to act as if we know it all and can do it ourselves but I find I can't even walk without Him holding my hand! He is my strength. He is my strong tower. He is my refuge in the storms of life. He is my right standing with the Father. What a friend we have in Jesus.
Let us sow The Word and reap life everlasting.
